Pocket watch with repeater on bell
–
A Swiss gold pair cased verge watch repeater on bell, made for the English market by the Frères Bordier in Genève, Switzerland, circa 1794. The case of this watch was crafted from 18 carat gold and features English Hallmarks 1794, a plain outer case, a pierced inner case, very fine florally worked sound openings, formerly additionally equipped with à toc and à tact slid which is now missing on the item presented here and a bell. The white enamel dial features an outer track with Arabic 5 minute numerals, Roman hour numerals and high quality gold hands. The magnificent movement is fitted with a verge escapement, a quarter hour repeater built in English style and a diamond end stone.
The dial is signed.

As it is clearly recognizable that this movement and the case are original, this watch is a very beautiful example that movements of important Geneva watchmakers were also used for watches sold on the English market.

Bordier
The Bordier family had a long history in Genevan watchmaking, with roots going back to the late 16th century. During the late 18th century, particularly around 1780, the prominent pocket watchmaking firm was Frères Bordier,  founded by Denis and Isaac Bordier and active in Geneva from 1787 to 1810.
The family business, operating under names like “Roman Bordier & Cie.” and “Bordier Frères,” likely ended with the passing of its key members and the shift in industry practices.
Their work is often found in antique auctions and museum collections, with documented pieces dating from the 1790’s to around 1830.
