Gold, enamel and pearl-set repeating centre seconds watch

A very fine and rare Swiss 18K gold and enamel, pearl-set open faced quarter repeating centre seconds musical cylinder pocket watch made for the Chinese market, circa 1820. Farewell to the Beloved.  The case back with a very finely painted on enamel scene of two ladies in despair as a young man goes off to serve his country, split pearl-set bezels, the band engine-turned, a bolt at 6 o’clock to activate the music, a lever at 4 o’clock protruding from under the cuvette for music/silent, the case is attributed to Frères Oltramare. Hinged gold cuvette.

 

Gold dial with champlevé radial Roman hours, outer minute divisions, acanthus engraved decoration between the numerals, the centre and outermost border engine-turned, blued steel serpentine hands. Gilt-brass movement, going barrels, cylinder escapement, three-arm plain brass balance with flat balance spring, sur plateau musical movement with 21 vibrating teeth, repeating on gongs by depressing the pendant, playing music on the hour or at will. Case punched with case maker’s mark AP.
