A Swiss 18 carat yellow gold full hunter quartz pocket watch with date, made by Eterna, circa 1990. This watch has a modern quartz movement with a lever escapement. The white enamel dial has painted black Roman numerals for the hours, a delicate central second hand, a date window at 6 o’clock, Louis XV style hands, and the Eterna brand insignia with stylised text. Eterna
Established in Grenchen, Switzerland, by Dr Josef Girard and Urs Schild, the company initially specialised in producing high quality movement blanks. By 1906, it officially adopted the name Eterna.
–
In 1932, Eterna split into two entities: ETA SA, which manufactured raw movements for the Swiss watch industry, and Eterna, which focused solely on luxury precision watches. ETA movements still power many high end modern watches.
–
Eterna gained fame in 1948 with the launch of the Eterna Matic automatic movement. They transformed watchmaking by introducing a central rotor on five small ball bearings, reducing friction and wear. This innovation led Eterna to adopt the five dots/spheres in a diamond shape as their permanent logo, visible on your dial.
–
During the quartz crisis (1980s–1990s), Eterna demonstrated resilience by producing ultra thin electronic watches, including the renowned Museum Quartz. The pocket watch in your collection exemplifies this era, featuring traditional gold hunter cases fitted with modern, low maintenance Swiss quartz calibres.
