Since the 16th century, watchmakers have been fascinated by the idea of fitting a watch into a ring, but only a few succeeded. This was no different in the 19th century. Anyone who tried successfully could become instantly famous, especially if their masterpiece found a prominent supporter. It was probably James Widman whose ring watch the Duke of Mantua wore, Antoine Rojard’s fame was based on Napoleon Bonaparte’s watch and even the young John Arnold was able to give an extraordinary ring watch to King George III from England, which made him known as an excellent watchmaker.
