A Swiss gilt metal key wind pocket watch in the shape of the holy book, circa 1580. The watch has a gilt movement and a verge escapement. Its engraved gilt dial features inscribed Arabic numerals (13-24) and Roman numerals (I-XII) with a single steel hand. The case is designed like the holy book (the bible) and has on the reverse an inscription above the figure of Christ at the top, reading INRI (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews). The watchmaker, Diet Maye, was active in Basel around 1580 and has signed the movement with his name and location.
