Gold open faced lever watch
–
An extremely rare, double faced, astronomical precision pocket watch with world time indication by H.M. Emanuel & Son, Portsea, England for the Indian market, circa 1890. An 18 Carat gold, glazed on both sides, precision lever movement according to Swiss patent 6585, face side “Greenwich Time”, triple calendar, moon phase and moon age, back world time with seven different places, blued steel hands, in good condition, face dial slight hairlines. It is an impressive, extremely rare Swiss astronomical pocket watch.
The importer of these watches was the company H.M. Emanuel & Son, Portsea, England, which sold these watches to India. It is interesting to note that the subsidiary dial for the Indian time indication (bottom right) is sometimes marked Calcutta, but in some pieces, it is also the only subsidiary dial without a place name, like here.
