A magnificent gold enamel hunting case pocket watch for the Ottoman market, made by Frederic Courvoisier in la Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, circa 1830. The extraordinarily beautiful full hunter case of this watch, made from 18 Carat gold, has very fine magnifying glass painting depicting musical instruments and flowers, surrounded by blue enamel with golden floral inlays, on both sides. The white enamel dial with Ottoman numerals the original hour hand and a “later minute” hand. The bridge movement has a cylinder escapement and the watch comes with a particularly beautiful gold key with pearl trimmings on a golden chain.

Frederic Courvoisier
Frederic Courvoisier in La Chaux-de-Fonds was a prominent watchmaker in the 1830’s. He hailed from a Swiss family with a long history of watchmaking, tracing back more than 200 years  Frederic Courvoisier manufactured the finest qualities, right up to his famous tourbillons. Frédéric-Alexandre Courvoisier (Fritz) was born on June 1, 1799 in La Chaux-de-Fonds. He was the son of Louis Courvoisier and Julie Houriet. Frédéric Courvoisier was trained in Geneva, Couvet and Basel. In 1842 he separated from his brothers. Philippe-Auguste and Henri-Louis founded the Courvoisier Frères company, La Chaux-de-Fonds; Frédéric founded his own company “Fritz Courvoisier”, which was very successful in Spain. His branch as a purveyor to the court was also located there. Frederic Courvoisier himself was active between 1790 and 1854. One of his notable timepieces is a watch made around 1835. It is housed in a gold, niello, and silver case and is currently part of the collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
