Gold open faced enamelled pocket watch by Louis Duchêne & Fils

A Swiss gold and multicoloured enamelled open faced pocket watch with a quarter repeater and date, circa 1830. The gilded brass movement features a cylinder escapement, is keywound, and incorporates a quarter repeater with a push release that strikes on two tone springs. It showcases a signed gold dial with black enamelled ornamentation and Roman numerals, an outer minute track, gold hands, and two silver guilloché subdials displaying small seconds and date indication. The 18 carat gold case has a finely engraved lid adorned with a multicoloured enamelled map of Northern and Central Italy. Additionally, the signed gilded metal dust cover bears an engraved number. The key is present.

Louis Duchêne (1730-1804) was a master clockmaker who specialised in creating pendulum clocks with automata. In 1791, he took his son on as a partner and founded the company Duchêne Louis et Fils. His finest examples include minute repeaters, petite and grande sonneries, calendars, minute and quarter repeaters, and jumping hours with date, alongside clocks featuring polychrome champlevé enamel and painted enamel.
