Gold open faced with virgule escapement by Gaultier Père & Oltramare

A very fine and rare Swiss 18K yellow gold, double-train early independent dead-seconds pocket watch, circa 1820. With 60-minute and 12-hour register and virgule escapement. Polished with a reeded band. Gilt-hinged cuvette. White enamel dial, an eccentric Breguet meantime chapter set to the right with outer minute divisions, to the left, a radial Roman chapter with outer minute divisions for the register, centre dead seconds with one-second divisions and Arabic 15-second numerals, and blued steel spade hands. Hinged, gilt brass full plate jewelled to the first, cylindrical pillars, going barrels, virgule escapement, 3-arm brass balance, continental pierced and engraved cock, pin at 5 for start/stop. Dial, cuvette, and movement signed.

Finding an independent dead-second watch with the rarely utilized virgule escapement and 12-hour register is unusual. The present watch is probably one of the first two-train independent dead seconds watches to have been made.
