For us Europeans, the solar year or the (Gregorian) solar calendar applies. Other cultures, such as China, on the other hand, rely on the moon and its different phases. Starting with the full moon, it takes about 29 days (exactly 29.53 days) until the moon has once circled the earth and it becomes a full moon again.
