Silver open faced cylinder watch by Armand Schwob & Frère

A Swiss pocket watch is made of silver, circa 1885. It is believed to have been owned by the Italian composer Pietro Mascagni and features a unique mechanism where rotating glass discs move the hands. Additionally, the watch includes an original autograph and dedication from the composer, dated October 8th, 1938. This pocket watch has a silver case glazed on both sides and decorated. The dial features rotating glass discs with applied spade hands and radial Roman numerals. The watch’s crescent shaped movement includes a cylinder escapement and a ring balance.

Pietro Mascagni (1863-1945) was a renowned Italian composer famous for his operas. His masterpiece Cavalleria Rusticana, released in 1890, caused a major sensation in the history of opera and was responsible for introducing the Verismo movement in Italian dramatic music.

Armand Schwob & Frère, a watch manufacturing company based in La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland, were granted two Swiss Patents, 2445 and 2526, in 1881, and an English Patent No. 9865 in July 1888 for the invention of Transparent Watches.
