Unsigned gold and pavé pearl-set watch attributable to Bautte et Moynier
–
A Swiss gold and pavé pearl-set single-cased cylinder watch with a matching key, made for the Chinese market, circa 1830. The timepiece features an unsigned gilded movement with a cylinder escapement, a plain three-arm balance, and a standing barrel. The gold engine-turned dial has a stippled chapter ring featuring seed-pearl set Roman numerals, an outer seed-pearl minute ring, and gold pearl-set hands. The case is crafted from gold, with the bezel and bow set with seed and split pearls, and the case back pavé-set with seed and split pearls in graduated sizes radiating outwards. It is stamped with M. B. within a lozenge-shaped cartouche, probably for Bautte & Moynier, and numbered 30951. The key is matching gold and pearl set.

The movement is fully wound but not running. However, applying gentle pressure to the barrel makes the watch briefly run. The dial has light scuffs, and one seed pearl is missing from the minute track just below 8 o’clock. Approximately 3 pearls are missing from the back of the case and 2 from the front. The key shows signs of solder repair to its shaft.

Two similarly decorated watches by Bautte & Moynier, numbered 31389 and 37418, can be found in the collection of the Patek Philippe Museum under inventory numbers S-636 and S-632.
