A very fine, big gold Swiss verge watch with date and rare engraved scene, circa 1780.
18 K gold interesting case with explanation of the shown scene in handwritten watchpaper, engraved historical scene on back ‘Clemeny Plea to King Edward III. in Calais 1347’. Extravagant, flat caliber with verge escapement and signed main plate. Original white enamel dial in very beautiful condition with Arabic numerals, original gold hands and hand with date.

Historical background to the scene: The one-year siege of Calais ended in 1347 with its conquest by the English. According to tradition, Edward wanted to hang six citizens out of anger over the long siege. As a result, pregnant Queen Philippa knelt before him to ask for mercy, and Edward spared them.
