Silver open faced watch with early carrousel escapement
–
A technically highly interesting pocket watch with carrousel made by Bahne Bonniksen in London, England, circa 1913. The very high quality plain silver open faced case has a gold hinge, crown and bow, and London Hallmarks. The white enamel dial marked Tourbillon has Roman hour numerals, an outer minute track, subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock and blued steel spade hands. The numbered movement has a very early carrousel escapement and is punched with the patent number.

Bahne Bonniksen
Carrousel timepieces are an invention of the Dane Bahne Bonniksen, who registered a patent in England in 1892. With his invention, he wanted to strike a balance between an expensive tourbillon and a normal chronometer. He even achieved better results with his carrousel watches than other manufacturers with tourbillons. One is only aware of very few copies that bear B. Bonniksen’s signature.
Bonniksen was born on 25 October 1859 in Bov, Schleswig, Denmark. At the age of 24, he moved to London where he studied with T.D. Wright at the British Horological Institute and City of London College.
