Gold, enamel, and repoussé watch by L. Leroy & Cie.
–
An unusual and fine French gold, enamel, and repoussé pair cased keyless lady’s lever watch, circa 1890. The pocket watch has a frosted gilded movement with a lever escapement, 17 jewels, and a mono-metallic balance. It features an enamel dial with a Roman numeral chapter ring, inner half-hour divisions, a polychrome enamel painted landscape scene at the dial centre, and blued steel beetle and poker hands.
–
The watch has two cases. The inner case is gold with polychrome enamel painted in 17th-century style in the manner of Huaud, showing Venus and Mars. Signed by J. Marchal, Fecit. The band has landscape vignettes, some with classical ruins, and a plain gold bezel with French control marks. The outer case is gold repoussé, featuring a classical figure, possibly Mercury, riding a horse with a dragon beneath its feet and a rocky coastline in the background. This case is surrounded by shell and scroll work and vignettes of hunting dogs and birds. The bezel is chased and engraved with scrolls and foliage, and it has a diamond-set thumbpiece.
–
The original box is fitted with green leather and gold tooling, featuring a dedication to Henriette Georgi from her grandparents, Ch. and M. Georgi, on the lid. The interior is lined with velvet and has two compartments for inner and outer cases. The silk-lined lid is gilt-printed with exhibition medals and signed by Ancne Mon Le Roy & Fils, L. The movement is not running. The visible screw for removing the movement from the case is rusted, and the threads are stripped. The dial is in good condition, with some signs of corrosion on the hands. The inner case has some chipping around the hand-setting olivette but is otherwise in good condition. The outer case is in very good condition. The presentation box has some tears in the silk lining of the lid but is otherwise in good condition. The watch cases fit well in their holders.
