Gold watch with the portrait of Madame Pompadour

Very fine and unusual Swiss 18 Carat yellow gold, enamel and diamond-set pair cased keyless lever pendant watch, circa 1893. Sold on November 6th, 1895. Accompanied by an Extract from the Archives. A repoussé outer case, the front bezel decorated with flowers and leaves, the back showing the scene amour et pomme, the inner case guilloché overlaid with translucent blue enamel, the front bezel decorated with gold leaves, the back also with gold leaves decoration, a central polychrome enamel painted portrait of Madame Pompadour set with rose-cut diamonds, transparent inside case back, unusual pendant design.

White enamel dial with painted blue Roman hours interspersed with gold stars, outer minute track with gold five-minute numerals and pink gold Louis XV hands. A silver-nickel movement, 19 jewels, straight-line lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance, blued steel flat balance spring, index regulator with graduations engraved on the centre bridge, wolf’s tooth winding wheels. Dial and movement signed.

Madame Pompadour was born as Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson in Paris, on December 29th, 1721 and died in Versailles, on April 15th, 1764, Marquise de Pompadour since 1745, and she was one of the most famous mistresses of King Louis XV of France.
