Silver and gilt brass oval pendant watch by Berger

An extremely rare French silver and gilt-brass oval verge pendant watch with biblical scenes, circa 1630. An oval full plate fire-gilded brass movement, gut and fusee, plain two-arm iron balance without balance spring, fine florally engraved and pierced balance cock. Silver dial, gilt chapter ring with Roman hours, engraved with foliage decoration, fantasy birds and masks, the motif in the centre of the dial shows Moses and the burning bush, a single blued hand. The silver band of the case is lavishly engraved with mythological birds and foliage decoration, the front and reverse showing elaborate scenes from the life of King Solomon. Movement signed.

Abraham Berg(i)er was born in Geneva. He married in Lyon. In 1597 Abraham went to Grenoble where he was appointed town clockmaker in 1612 as the successor of Laurent Grégoire. From 1624 to 1642 he was back working in Lyon.
