Silver half quarter repeater in pair cases by James Rousseau
–
A fine English silver pair cased half quarter repeating repoussé verge pocket watch, circa 1760. Fine full plate movement, chain and fusee, two hammers, three arm brass balance. Repoussé outer case depicting Roman soldiers, the figures have a striking presence against the background and seem almost three dimensional, open work decoration around the edge, the inner case is richly florally engraved also with open work decoration around the edges and a rear bell. Silver champlevé Roman hours and Arabic five minute numerals.

Unfortunately, the trade literature holds hardly any information on James Rousseau except for noting that he was active in London between 1743 and 1761. It is likely, however, that he was a descendant of the renowned watchmaking dynasty Rousseau of Geneva.
