An 18 carat gold hunting cased lever Glashütte pocket watch, circa 1912. Glazed, divided ¾ plate movement, lever escapement, gold screw compensation balance. Gilt dial with Arabic hours, outer minute divisions, an engine-turned centre and sunk subsidiary seconds. The case with a central matte hammered finish, white enamel meander pattern and engraved laurel ornaments. Dial signed, case numbered, movement signed and numbered, case and movement with matching numbers.

Julius Assmann was born in 1827 and died in 1886 at the age of 58. He was a passionate watchmaker in Glashütte, Germany. Assmann at one time was employed by his father-in-law, Ferdinand Adolph Lange, the man who laid the cornerstone of the German watchmaking industry in the 1840s. He founded his own company in 1852, the Julius Assmann Deutsche Präzisions-Taschenuhren-Fabrik (German Precision Pocket Watch Factory) producing key wound pocket watches. Assmann was soon awarded the gold medal by the German Trade Industry. Within two years, his watches progressed to crown winding and the three-quarter plates so characteristic of Glashütte. When he died his company was divided among the Assmann family.

This timepiece was advertised in a magazine in 1913. It was shown and described as “Handcrafted ornamentation. Back with matte, hammered finish, with white enamel Greek border, edges and bow decorated with engraved laurel pattern, gold case marked with official 750 gold stamp, 60 g. Original retail price 670 D-mark.”
