A fine 14 carat gold open faced Glashütte lever pocket watch, circa 1913. ¾ Plate movement, gold screw compensation balance. White enamel dial with Arabic hours, outer minute divisions and subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock. Plain case, monogram RN for Richard Nagel on the inner of the back lid. Dial signed, case numbered, movement signed and numbered, case and movement with matching numbers.

The former property of Richard Nagel, steward of a large estate in East Prussia.

Richard Nagel (1863-1913) studied farming and was the steward of a large estate in Chelchen near Duneyken in Treuburg in East Prussia. He married the daughter of the estate owner Friedrich Wilhelm Seydel, who was a well-known figure in East Prussia. Seydel devoted himself to communal issues and eventually became a Berlin council member.

Julius Assmann was born in 1827 and died in 1886 at the age of 58. He was a passionate watchmaker in Glashütte, Germany. Assmann at one time was employed by his father-in-law, Ferdinand Adolph Lange, the man who laid the cornerstone of the German watchmaking industry in the 1840s. He founded his own company in 1852, the Julius Assmann Deutsche Präzisions-Taschenuhren-Fabrik (German Precision Pocket Watch Factory) producing key wound pocket watches. Assmann was soon awarded the gold medal by the German Trade Industry. Within two years, his watches progressed to crown winding and the three-quarter plates so characteristic of Glashütte. When he died his company was divided among the Assmann family.
