A very rare and small French gilded brass pair-cased one-handed verge pocket watch, circa 1655. Gilt full plate movement, gut and fusee, Egyptian pillars, two-arm steel balance without balance spring, fine florally engraved and pierced balance cock. White enamel dial with Roman hours, inner minute divisions, polychrome enamel floral decoration in the centre and a blued steel hand. The brass outer case with a glazed back, a gilt-brass, lateral florally engraved and pierced inner case brass.

Estienne (Étienne) Hubert was born in 1634 and died around 1720. He was a renowned clockmaker in Rouen, France from 1655 until 1720. Estienne became a master in 1656. The British Museum, the Guildhall Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum all own clocks created by Hubert.
