A rare and heavy English 18 carat gold open faced cylinder pocket watch with alarm, circa 1817. Full plate movement, key wind, a hammer, one gong, a cylinder escapement and three arm steel balance. White enamel dial with Roman hours, an outer minute track and subsidiary seconds with a serpentine hand at 6 o’clock. The plain case with a reeded band. Dial signed, case numbered, movement signed and numbered, case and movement with matching numbers. Comes with a leather box.

Charles Edward Viner was granted the patent for setting the alarm hand through the coaxial, rotating crown in the upper part of the pendant.

Charles Edward Viner (1788-1875) completed his apprenticeship with Thomas Savage in London. In 1813, he became a member of the Clockmakers’ Company. He was known for his pocket watches of the finest quality, which he often equipped with the pump winding mechanism he invented.
