Charles Edward Viner, a renowned British clockmaker, invented a patent for the alarm hand setting via the coaxial, rotating crown in the upper part of the pendant. Viner (1788-1875) finished his apprenticeship with Thomas Savage in London and joined the Clockmakers Company in 1813. He was known for creating high-quality pocket watches, which often featured his own invention, the pump winding mechanism.
