Gold important cylinder watch
–
A fine and important French 18 carat gold and enamel open faced pocket watch with chatelaine and brooch, circa 1860. The gilt brass bar caliber movement with a cylinder escapement, ten jewels, a plain gilded brass three arm balance and flat blued steel balance spring. A gold hinged cuvette. White enamel dial with Roman hour numerals, outer dot minute divisions and original, blued steel Breguet hands. The case back with the translucent royal blue enamelled monogram A.H. on an engine turned ground.

 

Accompanied by a heavy, matching gold, enamel and pearl set chatelaine in the form of the coat of arms of the king of France with a gold enamelled key and seal, and the gold and blue enamel monogram A.H. with a royal crown on top. The brooch features two blue enamel shields, one with a sword and Fleurs-de-Lys on either side, the other with an arrow and a hunting horn, flanked by two lions, a bascinet with a crown above and a banner saying Praemium Salutis Franciae et Regis (Award for the salvation of France and the King in English) underneath, forming a decorative coat of arms.

The Allied Coat of Arms of the Alexandre de Haldat du Lys Family of Lorraine.
This châtelaine was probably made for the marriage of a direct or indirect descendant of Charles-Nicolas Alexandre de Haldat du Lys (1763-1852), doctor and physicist, and the author of numerous scientific publications.
