An English 18 carat gold, enamel and seed pearl set pair cased key wind pocket watch made by John Grant Sr. in London, circa 1795. The gilt full plate movement with a duplex escapement, plain three arm balance, pierced and engraved balance cock, silver regulation and diamond end stone. White enamel dial with Arabic hour numerals, outer minute divisions, a winding aperture at 4 o’clock and gilt arrow hands. The gilt metal outer case with a glazed back, a further polished inner case with a translucent blue enamel reverse featuring a single, central stone, both bezels set with seed pearls and the pendant decorated to match. Movement and cuvette signed and with matching numbers.

John Grant Sr. was a renowned London watchmaker, based on 75 Fleet Street and active from about 1781 to 1810. He was noted for his early, high quality and often innovative timepieces. Grant made fine and rare chronometers and duplex watches, and was further probably the last of the band of English experimenters with the lever escapement.

He was apprenticed to his famous uncle, Alexander Cumming and became a Freeman of the Clockmakers’ Company in 1781.

Grant Sr. died in 1810 and was succeeded by his son, John Grant Jr., who was born in 1797 and died in 1883. Grant Jr. was active from the early to mid-19th century.
