A rare and unusual Swiss boxed inking chronograph made by Ami Sandoz & Fils in Geneva, circa 1870. The half plate gilt cylinder movement with winding and setting from the dial. White enamel dial with outer fifths of a second, a subsidiary for the hour and minute recording, the center seconds hand with a reservoir for ink and an upper sprung marking hand, surrounded by finely engraved scrolls, fauna and foliation with buttons for stopping the hands and ink marking the dial. Comes in a fitted case and brass bound, burr maple box with key and vial for ink. Accompanied by a spare spring under the movement.

Ami Sandoz & Fils was a prominent watchmaking company active in Geneva and La Chaux-de-Fonds from approximately 1820 to 1900.

In 1878, the company achieved recognition by winning a silver medal at the World Exhibition in Paris. A pocket chronometer from Ami Sandoz & Fils is part of the collection of the British Museum. They utilized a winding mechanism invented by Gustave Sandoz. Business relations were maintained with Charles Gottlob Jonathan Seytz until his death on January 17th, 1848, in Hyeres, France.

In 1884, the company established a branch at 76 Markgrafenstrasse in Berlin. However, as early as 1861, a watch shop named Ami Sandoz & Fils was already listed at 21 Jerusalemer Strasse in the Allgemeiner Wohnungs-Anzeiger nebst Adreß- und Geschäftshandbuch für Berlin, dessen Umgebungen und Charlottenburg.

The operations in La Chaux-de-Fonds continued under the name Ducommun-Sandoz & Cie.
