Aluminium open faced pocket watch

A rare and lightweight Swiss aluminium open faced pocket watch made by Vacheron Constantin SA in Geneva, circa 1949. The manual wind movement with 17 jewels and adjusted to temperature. Silvered dial with applied Arabic hour numerals, an outer minute track, subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock and Breguet hands. The polished case with a presentation inscription on the back. Dial signed, case and movement signed and numbered.

In the mid 20th century, Vacheron & Constantin were commissioned with the difficult job of making a series of watches predominantly out of aluminium.

Despite being notoriously lightweight, they succeed, and the cases and plates of these watches were all made of aluminium. The result was an exceptionally light but sturdy watch.

Each timepiece was given as a memento to employees of the company, Aluminium Limited, once they attained 25 years of service and were embellished with a presentation inscription.

These watches are a very rare example of using such an unusual material in a series.
