Gold eight day going watch with calendar
–
An unusual Swiss 18 carat gold open faced eight day going pocket watch with calendar made by Brandt & Fils et Compagnie in Geneva, circa 1790. Gilt full plate fusee movement with a polished steel cylinder, small brass escape wheel, a balance situated under the dial and round pillars with vacant threaded holes. The plain consular case has a signed raised center on the back. White enamel dial with, in the upper half, semicircular arched Arabic numerals from 1 to 12, repeated in the lower half in Roman numerals, the minutes also marked twice, date indication at 12 o’clock, regulation at 6 and blued steel hands, the minute hand rotates once every two hours.
–
Diameter: 54 mm
–
Signed: Brandt & fils et Compagnie
–
An unusual dial layout, probably to represent the hours of night and day. The eight day duration is achieved without an extra train wheel by virtue of a high count on the fusee wheel and a small center pinion, together with the minute hand needing to rotate only twelve times a day rather than the more usual twenty-four.
