John Ellicott (1706-1772) is regarded as one of the most important watchmakers in England and established himself around 1728. In 1738 he became a member of the Royal Society. Ellicot was the inventor of a compensating pendulum and pushed the development of the cylinder escapement a few years after its improvement by Graham. In some of his later watches the cylinder was even made of rubies. His son Edward already worked with his father John since 1760. After his unexpected death in 1772 he continued the business alone until his own death in 1791.
