A very fine English 22 carat gold and enamel pair cased repeating verge pocket watch, circa 1780. High-quality verge movement, splendid verge cock, diamond endstone. White enamel dial with Roman hours and Arabic minutes, presumably original rose gold hands. The outer case with violet engine-turned enamel, white enamel rims, an elliptical plaque with polychrome enamel portrait of a lady, pierced inner case, master’s punch ET, bell. Case numbered, dial signed, cuvette and movement signed and numbered.

Higgs & Evans London were highly respected watchmakers and stands for top-class English enamel watches. The cases mainly designed in the same style, with multi-coloured enamel and a central elliptical enamel painted plaque. Higgs and Evans first worked in the Sweetings Alley and later in the Royal Exchange. The company was founded in 1775 and existed until 1825. They weres were mostly specialized in the production of watches for the Spanish market, some of their watches can be found in the Science Museum and the Guildhall Museum.
