Elongated octagonal pendant watch by Lacloche Frères

Exceptionally fine and rare French gold, platinum, amethyst, carved glass, diamond and pearl-set and painted on ivory lady’s pendant watch, circa 1908. Cross shaped movement, 18 jewels, straight-line lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance with Breguet balance spring. Off-white ivory time indication on a painted violet background decorated with putti and birds, delicate Arabic hours and blued steel Breguet hands. Elongated octagonal case, led carved glass with repeated motif, a hollow octagonal shaped rim fitted with diamond-set platinum bezels fixed to a gold frame both with painted violet coloured ivory plaques, the back decorated with a muse and two putti, faceted amethyst covers, two pearl finials, a constituting winding/setting knob, diamond-set platinum loop for a chain, diamond-set platinum plaques running from the bezels to the finials. Case signed and numbered, movement numbered and signed by Verger, the miniatures signed by Paillet.

Lacloche Frères were manufacturers and retailers of high-fashion jewellery encrusted with precious gems established in Madrid in 1875. They opened a branch in Paris in 1898. Lacloche Frères was one of the major Parisian jewellers of the period together with Cartier, Boucheron, Mauboussin, Fouquet, Chaumet and Van Cleef & Arpels.

Fernand Paillet (Niort 1840-Paris 1918) a pupil of Carrier-Belleuse, painted portraits on enamel and porcelain, as well as watercolours. He exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1873, and from 1879 to 1888.
