A technically highly interesting and extremely rare German metal cylinder pocket watch with an early self-winding mechanism, circa 1810. Technically very interesting early cylinder movement with a self-winding mechanism. White enamel dial with Roman hours and outer minute divisions, steel hands. Case with finely pearled rim and floral engraving to the back, coin rim. Movement signed.

This watch comes from the hand of the famous watchmaker Joseph Maler, who came from a prestigious Staufen watchmaker family. Franz Joseph Mahler, born 12. August 1795 in Staufen (Allgäu) – died 21. June 1845 in Munich, was a German instrument maker and inventor. He developed optical and mechanical instruments for the leading astronomers and observatories of his time. His brother Franz Mahler was also an important manufacturer of small watches. He invented an essential part for self-winding mechanisms for pocket watches.
