An English extremely decorative repoussé verge pocket watch in a triple case, circa 1770.
Full plate movement, keywind, frosted, gilt, chain/fusee, moulded movement pillars, blued screws, verge escapement, steel balance, florally engraved and pierced balance bridge, silver regulator disc, and signed: W. Rivers, London 7776. Enamel dial with Roman radial hours, arcaded minute ring, Arabic five minutes numerals, and pierced hands. Three cases: transport case – gilt, applied shagreen with stud decoration;  outer case – gold, repoussé case, elaborate battle scene, large lateral hinge; and inner case – 18K gold, smooth.

William Rivers
Rivers was a member of the London Clockmakers’ Company from 1770 on and became its master in 1794. He died in 1820. Rivers is known for a bracket clock, a triple-cased pocket watch now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and a double-cased piece in the Fränkel Collection.
