Gilded watch with silver profile bust of Emperor Napoleon I

A fine French gilded metal and silver pocket watch commemorating the Battle of Jena in Germany, circa 1806. This watch features a mechanical key wound movement with verge escapement. It has a white enamel dial with Arabic hour numerals, outer minute divisions, a winding square at two o’clock and gilt hands. The case is intricately decorated in silver around the band with a recessed frieze. The back with pierced and engraved silver decoration is inscribed L’Armée française à Jena en 1806 – A. Vengé Rosbach de 1757. In the center, within a shield, is a profile bust of Emperor Napoleon I against a background of military trophies. A key is included.

Historical background
The Battle of Rossbach (November 5th, 1757) resulted in Frederick II’s Prussian army defeating the French and Imperial troops. This victory was later avenged at Jena in 1806, where a commemorative column was erected on the site but eventually dismantled by the French.
