Gold, enamel and diamond-set pocket watch by Philippe Terrot

A fine and rare Swiss 18 carat gold, enamel and diamond-set open faced verge pocket watch, circa 1780. Hinged gilt-brass full plate movement with conical pillars, fusee with chain, verge escapement, plain brass three-arm balance, flat balance spring, gilt brass continental cock with polished steel end-piece, silver regulation dial. White enamel dial with Arabic numerals, outer minute divisions and original rose-cut diamond-set hands. Case with rose-cut diamond-set bezel, the back decorated with a painted on enamel scene depicting a young loving couple in classical dress in a garden with a temple and caged bird, rose-cut diamond-set and gold paillon detail, outer paillon border, glazed gilt-brass outer case. Dial and movement signed. Accompanied by a fitted box.

Philippe Terrot was born in 1696, in Pont-en-Royans, Dauphiné, France and died in 1781, in Saconnex near Geneva. He was a refugee in 1700, arrived in Geneva and officially obtained Swiss naturalization in 1732. He took Jean- Pierre Thuillier in partnership between 1735 and 1750. They created high-quality gold watches decorated with enamel and porcelain, and also religious clocks.
