A very fine and rare German 18 carat gold open faced keyless lever pocket watch with dead-seconds chronograph, circa 1889. Retailed by F. Krussmann & Cia, Rio De Janeiro. Frosted gilt 3/4 plate movement, 26 jewels, the top ones mostly in screwed gold chatons, straight-line Glashütte lever escapement, gold escape wheel and pallet fork, banking by a single pin in a pinhole, cut bimetallic compensation balance with gold screws, blued steel Breguet balance spring, diamond endstone, swan-neck micrometric regulator, Lange’s patented dead seconds mechanism from the same train. Gold hinged cuvette engraved Ao artista Joao dos Santos Couceiro Reconhecimento da S. Propagadora das Bellas-Artes 30 de Novembro de 1889 Rio-De-Janeiro. White enamel dial with painted Roman numerals, outer minute divisions, sunk subsidiary seconds and original gold spade hands.  Solid case, polished, hinged bezel and back, engine-turned case back with initials CSJ. Dial, case and movement signed.
