Gilt brass pre balance spring verge watch by Charles Peiras

A fine and rare French gilt brass pre balance spring single handed oval pendant watch, circa 1615. Oval gilt brass movement, turned vase shaped pillars, fusee with gut line, short four wheel train with six leaf pinions, verge escapement, brass two armed circular foliot, elongated cock pierced and engraved with fruiting vine, secured by a pin, ratchet wheel and click mainspring set up. Dial hinged to the case, oval, integral chapter ring with Roman hour numerals with inner dots, heart shaped half hour divisions, the centre engraved with a scene of Bacchus holding a cup of wine and leaning on a barrel amongst foliage, outer border engraved with foliage, beasts and winged herms and blued steel arrow hand. Re-gilded oval case, fixed back, the band engraved with a continuous band of fruit and flowers, turned lower finial, tulip pendant with loose ring, hinged cover over the dial, the interior engraved with a wreath. Movement signed.
