Gold open faced keyless lever with patent chronograph

A rare and unusual English 18 carat gold open faced keyless lever pocket watch with patent chronograph and 30-minute register of uncommon construction, the case with Chester hallmarks for 1889-1890. Frosted gilt ¾ plate movement, 14 jewels, lateral counterpoised lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance with blued steel Breguet balance spring, index regulator, patented chronograph mechanism. Gold hinged cuvette. White enamel dial with Roman numerals, outer minute track, outermost chronograph track divided into fifths with five-minute Arabic numerals, sunk subsidiary seconds, 30-minute register with the hand rotating counterclockwise and original blued steel hands. Polished case. Case numbered

The fourfold concept involves an additional wheel in the train, allowing the seconds hand to rotate counterclockwise, and a relatively simple stop mechanism. The chronograph engagement is taken from Lugrin’s patent.
