Gold and enamel hunting cased verge watch by Gerrit Knip

An extremely fine Dutch 22 carat gold and enamel hunting cased verge pendant watch, the case depicting scenes from the story of Cephalus and Procris, circa 1750, incorporating Blois school enamel panels of circa 1685. Gilt brass full plate movement, square baluster pillars, fusee with chain, verge escapement, three armed steel balance, flat balance spring, finely pierced and engraved continental cock and backplate furniture, silver regulation disc. White enamel dial withl Roman numerals, outer arcaded minute track, Arabic five minute numerals and original pierced gilt hands. Case with hinged cover decorated with a painted on enamel scene of Procris returning to her lover with the dog and arrow of Diana in a landscape, cupid above, the interior decorated with a finely painted view of two figures viewing classical ruins by a wooded riverbank, curved band and bezel decorated with engraved rococo foliate scrolls and flowers, the back decorated with a scene of Cephalus discovering the mortally wounded Procris in a wooded landscape, the interior decorated with a very finely painted classical landscape. Dial and movement signed.

This watch has a Blois enamel case whose decoration is characteristic of the watches made for export to markets such as the Dutch, English and German, at the end of the 17th century. The colour palette, shape of the panels and the size, all indicate that it dates from the final period of Blois enameling.
