Silver, brass verge pocket watch by Joseph Niggl
–
An impressive Austrian triple-cased verge pocket watch, circa 1780. This watch features three cases. The two inner ones are silver, while the outer case is silver, brass, and tortoiseshell. The inner case flaunts the master’s mark IS. The spindle movement is signed and extremely unusual, with silver decoration, silver dust protection ring, and a balance bridge shaped like the Austrian double-headed eagle. The enamel dial showcases Roman radial hours, an outer minutes track, and gold-plated hands, with some small restorations in the edge area. The tortoiseshell decoration is workable but has defects in the edge area. The watchmaker behind this timepiece is a well-known Austrian named Niggel/Niggl, who probably served his apprenticeship in Friedberg and became a master in 1750.
