A heavy and rare Danish/Swiss hunting cased flat precision pocket watch with pivoted detent chronometer escapement and with female key winding, circa 1855. Very early Jürgensen pivoted detent chronometer movement, keywind with square openings for so-called female keys, large gold screw cut bimetallic compensation balance, big ruby bearings, gold escape wheel, blued arms, blued inside, blue hairspring and signature Jules Jürgensen Copenhagen N° 8233.
Engine turned 18 carat gold case, ribbed band, gold cuvette signed Jules Jürgensen Copenhagen. Front cover opens by pushing the button on the pendant.
Signed white enamel dial with Roman hours, sunk subsidiary dial for the seconds at 6 o’clock and gold Breguet hands.

Jules Jürgensen 1808-1877 was born in Le Locle 1808 as son of the watchmaker Urban Jürgensen (grandson of Jacques-Frédéric Houriet). In Copenhagen Jurgensen received his training in the watchmaking business of his family and in addition studied mathematics, astronomy and foreign languages. Shortly after the death of Jacques-Frédéric Houriet, Jürgensen went to Switzerland and opened a watch manufactory in Le Locle. His precision watches gained worldwide recognition.
