Silver pair cased pocket watch by Jacob Hasluck
–
A very fine and rare Dutch pair cased verge clock watch with day and night indicator, circa 1695.
This watch boasts a fine full plate movement, key wind, fire gilt, and applied engraved and pierced ornaments. Its chain/fusee mechanism, square baluster pillars, and three-arm brass balance harmonise to ensure precise timekeeping. The addition of a silver index regulator enhances the watch’s precision, while the finely engraved balance cock with mascaron adds a touch of elegance to the design. One of the most striking features of the watch is the semicircular aperture in the dial, which reveals a revolving disk with images of the sun and moon that point to the hours (VI-XII-VI). The minutes are displayed on a ring at the outer edge of the dial, while the seconds are located at the bottom (although the hand is currently missing). The dial has been partially stoned down and engraved with the present signature, which replaced that of the original Dutch watchmaker.
The watch is housed in two silver polished cases. The case maker responsible for these exquisite cases was Marcus Bellanger, a French artisan who was active in Amsterdam during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
This timepiece is a remarkable example of horology. It was crafted by Jacob Hasluck, a highly skilled watchmaker of the early 18th century, and is considered a true masterpiece of mechanical engineering.
The signature of Jacob Hasluck is present on the face of the watch, while on the movement, the signature reads J. Hasluck / St. John Street. The movement also features an engraved monogram, possibly reading A W (?) with a coronet above. Additionally, the case maker’s mark, MB conjoined, is present on the case, indicating the maker as Marcus Bellander.
