Daniel Quare, English watchmaker

London watchmaker Daniel Quare was born in Somersetshire in 1647. Around 1680 he manufactured pocket watches with a quarter repeater mechanism based on his patent. In 1686 he got into a priority dispute with Edward Barlow. In the patent application, however, Quare could assert itself against Barlow because his construction required only one pusher for the repetition. In comparison, Barlow’s hour and quarter-hour strike variants required one pusher each for release.
Quare improved the minute hand to move in tandem with the hour hand when setting the time, rather than independently as it used to.
–
He made pocket watches with a dial division of six hours. In 1671 Quare was incorporated into the Clockmakers Company and in 1708, became master. In 1718 Stephen Horseman became his partner. After Quare’s death on March 19, 1724, Horseman continued to work in the company under the previous name ( Quare and Horseman ) until the company’s bankruptcy in 1733. Richard Peckover presumably took over from this company’s bankruptcy.
–
Some of Daniel Quare’s clocks are now part of the Royal Collections at Buckingham Palace and Hampton Palace. In addition to his legendary clocks, Daniel Quare built numerous barometers and mathematical instruments. Alongside Thomas Tompion, his fiercest rival, he constructed the first equation clocks at the suggestion of Christiaan Huygens .
