Moyse Gevril (Moÿse or Gevrille) was born in 1749 in Le Locle, Switzerland and resided in Crêt Vaillant near Le Locle. He was the son of Jacques Gevril. Gevril became a master watchmaker in 1784 and made self-winding pocket watches using an oscillating weight. He supplied watches to Ph. Du Bois & Fils. In the Du Bois archives, 18 watches are recorded, presumably self-winding. Moyse founded the company Moyse Gevril & Fils. The present watch was delivered to Frères Petit in Paris. Moyse Gevril died around 1791.

Since the publication of Alfred Chapuis and Eugène Jaquet, this model of self-winding watch has been attributed to Moÿse Gevril.
