Gold hunting cased key winding lever watch

A fine and heavy English 14 carat yellow gold full hunter quick beat pocket watch made by Joseph Johnson in Liverpool, circa 1850. It features a mechanical key winding fire gilded brass movement with a chain and fusee, an English lever escapement, a jewel setting with a diamond endstone, and Liverpool Window cap jewels, signed Jos. Johnson, Liverpool. The white enamel dial has black Roman numerals for the hours, an outer minute track, a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock, and gold spade hands, signed Jos. Johnson, Liverpool, Quick Beat.

The timepiece is housed in a substantial, finely engraved and engine turned round three body, 14 carat solid yellow gold full hunter case. It features a spring hinged front cover decorated with an intricately detailed chased scene depicting a stag resting in a forest setting (note: spring lid pusher missing). The matching engine turned reverse back cover has a central floral rosette motif. There is a solid gold inner protective cuvette with a winding aperture and a sturdy round suspension bow. The inner case back bears the maker’s mark JH and serial number.
