Verge pocket watch with repeater and sonnerie
–
An extremely rare gold and enamel verge watch with repeater, sonnerie and the original gold key with mother of pearl inlay, made for the Ottoman market by Markwick Markham and Perigal in London, England, circa 1800. This watch features an exceptionally splendid enamelled 18 carat gold case with a pierced edge, a bell and a finely executed, remarkably well preserved, painting of outstanding quality on the reverse. The watch’s protective outer case, however, is missing. The enamel dial features an outer minute and hour track with Ottoman numerals and the original gold hands. The numbered movement is fitted with a verge escapement, an hour repeater activated by a button in the pendant, a self striking mechanism and a diamond end stone.
The dial and movement are signed.

Perigal

the Perigal family worked extensively with Markwick Markham, resulting in some of the most sought after English luxury timepieces of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Rather than a typical day to day workshop partnership, this collaboration was a highly successful commercial alliance specifically targeting the wealthy Ottoman Empire (Turkish) export market.
