Heavy gold pocket chronometer watch
–
A heavy gold pocket watch with duplex escapement, made by the chronometer maker William Reid Junior in London, England, circa 1819. The numbered plain open faced case of this watch is crafted from 18 carat gold, has London hallmarks from 1819, a dedication on the cuvette also from 1819: “The gift of MrS Wreford, July 14th, 1819, William Dustan July 22 1797” and a numbered dust cover. The numbered white enamel dial has Roman Hour numerals and an oversized seconds dial at 6 o’clock for observation purposes and solid gold hands. The numbered movement has a fine duplex escapement with a diamond end stone and a chronometer balance.
Case and movement have matching numbers and the dial, dust cover and movement are signed.

William Reid was a well known London chronometer maker. Even if the dial and movement differ by one number, it is likely that everything about this watch is original.
