Gold open faced cylinder watch by Berthie
–
An antique and ultra thin Swiss 18 carat gold and enamel open faced pocket watch, circa 1880. The movement, visible through an open cover, has a cylinder escapement and three jewels. The dial features Roman hour markers, an outer minute track and elegantly styled hands. The cuvette is engraved Berthie A Geneve Echappement A Cylindre Quatre Trous en Rubies. The back cover of the case is adorned with an elaborate hand painted polychrome enamel scene depicting a woman and child in a pastoral setting within a decorative frame featuring intricate engraving and vibrant blue enamel accents, the patterns within the frame are with symmetrical, flowing and interlacing lines that evoke the arabesque style, commonly seen in Islamic decorative arts, the front bezel is ornamented with detailed engraving, the crown, designed in a decorative bow shape, adds both functionality and visual appeal, allowing the watch to be worn as a brooch pendant.
