A fine English 18 carat yellow gold open faced quarter repeating pocket watch, made by Viner & Co in London, dated 1827. This complex timepiece has a mechanical movement with a fusee and chain system and a verge escapement. It includes a quarter repeating function that strikes the hours and quarters on a gong. The gilded dial is decorated with guilloché and an applied floral border. It has black Roman numerals for the hours and steel Breguet style hands. The 18 carat yellow gold case is adorned with a guilloché motif and a matching floral border on the back. The caseband is fluted. The case bears London hallmarks for 1827.

Charles Edward Viner (1788–1875) was an eminent English watch and clock maker, apprenticed to Thomas Savage in 1802. Free of the Clockmakers’ Company in 1813 and a Liveryman from 1819, Viner worked from prestigious London addresses including 233 Regent Street, 151 New Bond Street, and the Royal Exchange. He was known for technical innovations like the pump winding system. His firm produced a wide range of high quality timepieces, from sophisticated pocket watches with complications to fine carriage clocks. His work is often represented in major collections, including the Science Museum in London.
