Gold decorative hunting cased key winding lever watch
–
A fine English 18 carat yellow gold full hunter pocket watch made by José Rodríguez Losada in London, circa 1865. This watch has a high quality mechanical key winding and key setting movement featuring an English lever escapement, a pierced and engraved balance cock, and a premium compensation balance wheel, signed J.R. Losada, 105 Regent Street, London. The heavily decorated silver dial has an outer minute track, Roman numerals for the hours, an outer decorative border of gold floral foliage, an intricate openwork die cut gold centre rosette, a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock, and Fleur de Lys blued steel hands.

The timepiece is housed in an 18 carat yellow gold full hunter case. The front and reverse outer covers are embellished with detailed, all over hand engraved geometric basketweave textures and scrolled foliate relief borders surrounding a central vacant cartouche, while the inner 18 carat gold dust cover (cuvette) is decorated with a floral cluster framing two dedicated winding and handsetting apertures.

José Rodríguez Losada (1801–1870), professionally known as J.R. Losada, was one of the most celebrated and culturally significant master watchmakers of the 19th century. Originally a liberal Spanish military officer, he fled to London in the 1830s as a political exile and established a magnificent showroom and workshop at 105 Regent Street. Catering to royalty, the Spanish Navy, and wealthy aristocrats across Spain and Latin America, Losada became world famous for combining robust, high precision English mechanical movements—such as chronometers, duplex movements, and advanced levers—with highly ornate, luxurious continental artistic styling. Despite his exile, he remained deeply connected to his homeland and gained lasting historical immortality by gifting the iconic Gobernación clock at the Puerta del Sol in Madrid, which still chimes the Spanish New Year. Surviving pieces bearing his Regent Street signature are exceptionally rare and sought after by international horological collectors.
